Hankook - History!
Hankook Tire Co. is a South Korean manufacturer of car and truck tyres. The name "Hankook" (kor. 한국) stands for "Korea". In various countries, the company uses different names, such as Hankook Tyre in England and Hankook Reifen in Germany. It was founded in 1941 as Chosun Tire Industrial Co. and was one of the seven largest tyre manufacturers worldwide in 2009, and one of the six largest in 2015 and 2021.
Hankook operates production facilities in Korea, China, Hungary, Indonesia and the USA. A development centre was opened in Hanover in 1997. As an original equipment supplier, the company supplies numerous car brands, including BMW, Volkswagen, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Volvo, Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Kia. A cooperation with Michelin existed between 2003 and 2011. Since 2012, BMW 3 Series models and since 2013 the Mercedes S- and E-Class have been equipped with Hankook tyres. European production was expanded in 2010, the Hungarian plant in Rácalmás produces around 17 million tyres annually and received ISCC Plus certification in 2023. An expansion is planned by 2027.
Since 2011, Hankook has been the exclusive tyre supplier to the DTM. In 2016, the company was also listed as a supplier for the Tesla Model 3. The subsidiary Hankook & Company has been selling AGM starter batteries in Korea since 2005 and in Europe since 2022.
